Saku Kali
Kali is a kvass-like drink whose history dates back 4000 years. The first written records are were noted down in 989 in Saint Vladimir’s, Kiev’s grand duke, chronicles.
The predecessors of this kvass-like drink were kvass and ivajook, which is another drink made from grain. These were later replaced by kali, which was an equally popular drink amongst city- and countryfolk. In the 80s, the kvass-like drink sold from yellow truck tanks was one of the most popular summer drinks that is until this day nostalgically remembered. At that time the drink was prepared using a mixture on rye bread and barley malt and then fermented with lactic acid bacteria as well as yeast.
The most important quality when it comes to making kali is that it’s genuine. Although you can find a lot of drinks in stores with the same title, few of them are the real thing – a naturally fermented drink made from rye and barley malt wort.Saku Kali is the real thing made from clean water and fermented rye and barley malt wort. Saku Kali tastes a little like bread and is slightly sweet. To quench your thirst better, the drink has been carbonated.
The alcohol content of Saku Kali is under 0.5% VOL due to the fermentation process and it is therefore categorized under alcohol-free drinks. This means that it can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
